Initial Proposition for the Semester

I was considering hosts of ideas for what I would like to do this semester and I decided that I wanted to do something that would greatly improve my growing portfolio, as well as be able to incite change in the world.

+++

I started out thinking of destruction as a form of creation, but upon speaking with Jessica about it, I believe I can wrap that entire thought into the butterfly effect as well as branch off into several other quadrants of the idea that I would love to explore and work with in the project.

+++

The butterfly effect, the idea that change begins small. Minor things can make major differences.

+++

Defined:

Small variations of the initial condition of a dynamical system may produce large variations in the long term behavior of the system.

+++

The phrase refers to the idea that a butterfly's wings might create tiny changes in the atmosphere that may ultimately alter the path of a tornado or delay, accelerate or even prevent the occurrence of a tornado in a certain location. The flapping wing represents a small change in the initial condition of the system, which causes a chain of events leading to large-scale alterations of events. Had the butterfly not flapped its wings, the trajectory of the system might have been vastly different. While the butterfly does not cause the tornado, the flap of its wings is an essential part of the initial conditions resulting in a tornado.

The idea is based in Chaos Theory and sensitive dependence on initial conditions.

I would like to harness this theory to promote ideas surrounding the butterfly effect that coincide with modern life.  I will be using mixed media applications. -Likely doing prints and doing gel medium transfers or something of the sort, onto different surfaces relevant to the piece. I will likely do somewhere around 15-20 pieces this semester of varying size and shape (depending on size of mounting surface and relevance to idea)

I will of course, do as many as it takes to complete the thoughts that are flooding me right now, so don't quote me on the numbers, lets call it a minimum.

+++

Pieces regarding the theory, as well as using the theory itself regarding my small actions herein, this semester should be a big step for me and I look forward to critique.
